LIBYAN POLITICAL TALKS UNDER UNSMIL SUPERVISION
Limak Atlantis Deluxe Resort & Hotel • March 2-6, 2020
After Muammar al-Gaddafi died in 2011, the already existing conflict in Libya did not end due to the rise in instability and factionalism. The vacuum of authority in the country resulted in the invasion of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). Several territories were occupied by the IS to be used as a hub for human trafficking.
Currently, Libya is in an urgent need of peace, security, and unity. Duration of the crisis fazes the possibility of reaching a settlement in the country. For many, peacebuilding is about to cease to exist. For the sake of the citizens, the parties must compromise and finalize an agreement on the legitimate government of the country. Under the supervision of the United Nations, who has been a major actor in facilitating the relevant crucial processes and providing humanitarian aid to those in need within the region, political talks must be conducted again, this time with a more inclusive and decisive outcome. The tentative status-quo affirms the fundamental need for further negotiations.
Libyan Political Talks Under UNSMIL Supervision will be a meeting between the numerous stakeholders with respect to the situation in Libya, including the Tobruk-based House of Representatives, the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord and their supporters. The meeting will be under the supervision of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, an integrated special political mission established on 16 September 2011 upon the request of the Libyan authorities, to support the new interim authorities of the country in their post-conflict struggle. As simultaneously changing dynamics both in the domestic context and the international arena may have an impact on the direction of the talks, the parties must strive for a solution that does not condone internal and external factors.
