Being the third committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) covers a wide range of issues from advancement of women to indigenous issues and from treatment of refugees to the right to self-determination. The Committee also focuses on social development issues such as criminal justice, persons with disabilities, and international drug control. SOCHUM also examines human rights questions around the world working closely with special rapporteurs, independent experts, and chairs of working groups. The committee gathers annually with the agenda decided at least seven months prior to the meeting.
